Port de Lers: north-west take-off, reliable flying site

Take-off altitude: ~1,417 m Orientation: North-West Level: All levels Live: 7:30 am → 6:00 pm

An iconic paragliding site in the Couserans area, Port de Lers offers a clear north-west-facing take-off and a generous landing area below. The webcam gives you an instant view of cloud cover, air movement and the convective potential over the surrounding mountains.

What this webcam shows you:

  • Visibility and cloud formation along the ridges
  • Sunshine versus high-altitude cloud veil
  • Thermal signs: cumulus streets, spreading clouds
  • Go / no-go decision-making before driving up to the pass
Pilot tip: cross-check the webcam with your forecast — wind at take-off, thermal index and stability — to avoid surprises when you arrive.

Prat d'Albis: the ridge above Foix

Altitude: ~1,200 m Orientation: North-West Level: Experienced thermal pilots Live: 8:00 am → 8:00 pm

An iconic ridge overlooking Foix, Prat d'Albis is a favourite flying playground for local pilots. The webcam gives an immediate view of the cloud base, morning valley condensation and the stability of the air mass.

What this webcam shows you:

  • Cloud base and cumulus height
  • Humidity and morning valley fog
  • Convective cycles developing during the day
  • Landing comfort around the landing zone
Pilot tip: if the ridge is capped early in the morning, the day may become very active. Watch how quickly the clouds build.

How to read these paragliding webcams

  1. Visibility: are the ridge and landing area clearly visible?
  2. Cloud base: does the cloud base leave enough safety margin above take-off?
  3. Wind clues: tree movement, cloud drift direction, rotor signs or venturi effects.
  4. Timing: calm morning conditions, thermal triggering, late-day overdevelopment.
  5. Safety first: when in doubt, choose the calmer option — or fly with a Kymaya instructor.

Frequently asked questions

Are the webcams really live?
Yes. A new image is captured approximately every minute. Port de Lers is live from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, and Prat d'Albis from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Outside these time slots, the webcams automatically switch to night mode.
What can I do in the player menu?
The player menu gives pilots access to several useful features: timelapse, sharing the image or video, local weather, daily replay over the past 365 days, and a detailed site description for the selected paragliding site.
Can I decide to go flying based only on the webcam?
No. The webcam is an excellent visual confirmation tool, but it does not replace a full weather and aerology analysis: forecast, wind aloft, stability, thermal index, and of course your level and physical condition on the day. Use it as an additional tool.
Which site should I choose today: Port de Lers or Prat d'Albis?
It depends on the wind direction and your flying goal. Port de Lers works well in a north-west to west flow and remains a very accessible school site. Prat d'Albis is better suited to north-west conditions and offers excellent terrain for thermal flying and cross-country. When in doubt, contact us.
What should I do if the webcam does not load?
Outside operating hours, the webcam is in night mode — this is normal. During active hours, it may occasionally be unavailable due to very cloudy weather, maintenance or temporary signal loss. Try again a few minutes later, or check our Ariège weather stations for additional data.
Where does the data displayed below the webcam come from?
The weather data displayed below the webcam is provided for information and helps complement the visual reading of the conditions. It does not replace a complete aerological analysis before flying.
